Location: In the Lesser Antilles (eastern Caribbean), between Guadeloupe and Martinique. Size: 290 sq. mi. (751 sq. km.). Population: 79,000 (primarily of African descent).

Who Really Rules: In 1980 the conservative, pro-American Freedom party, led by Mary Eugenia Charles, won the country's first parliamentary elections since independence in 1978. Charles is the first woman to become prime minister of a Caribbean nation. Following the election, the Canadian and British governments promised to provide additional training and equipment to the 250-member Dominican police force, reportedly at the request of the U.S. State Dept.
