6. THE RICHEST MAN IN BABYLON (1955) by GEORGE CLASON

In 1926 George Clason issued the first of a famous series of pamphlets on thrift and financial success, using parables set in ancient Babylon. These were distributed by banks and insurance companies and finally collected into a book which has no equal in the art of acquiring wealth. Clason's advice, in the parable from which the book title was taken, is a good example of this book's wisdom: "Remember that a part of all you earn is yours to keep. Take whatever portion seems wise but let it be not less than one-tenth and lay it aside. Then, make your treasure work for you. Make it your slave. Make its children and its children's children work for you. Invest your treasure with greatest caution. Counsel with wise men. Let them save you from error. Enjoy life while you are here. Do not overstrain or try to save too much. Let not yourself get niggardly and afraid to spend. Life is good and life is rich with things to enjoy." Available in hardcover and paperback (Hawthorn Books).
