TWO CENTURIES OF WORLD HISTORY: 1778-1978

1788

King George III of England showed signs of mental derangement and was confined temporarily in a strait jacket. He had experienced similar, less severe attacks of paralysis and hysteria several times during his reign. Although he appeared to recover in 1789, he became violently insane again in 1811 and remained so until his death in 1820. Many present-day medical authorities believe his mental disorder resulted from porphyria, a hereditary disease affecting the red pigment in the blood.
