WHERE THERE'S A WILL

BARUCH SPINOZA, Dutch philosopher, died 1677

Last Will: Value of his impoverished estate was 392 guilders. Harassed by church officials, he made last provision only for a manuscript which he had not dared publish. He locked it in his desk and left the key with instructions that, upon his death, desk and key be transmitted to his Amsterdam publisher. Thus, since the world was still unready for his thought, his towering Ethics did not appear until after his death.
