MICHAEL DE MONTAIGNE (1533-1592)

His Person: French essayist and wit. His political views have been described as anywhere from extremely reactionary to libertarian. Saint-Beuve commented that Montaigne was a good Catholic, only he was not a Christian. This stoic-skeptic-epicurean followed a critical method that questioned everything and left the finding of answers to the lesser intellects.

His Belief: "O senseless man, who cannot possibly make a worm and yet will make Gods by the dozens!"
