REUNION

Location: An island east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Size: 969 sq. mi. (2,510 sq. km.) Population: 521,000.

Who Really Rules: Reunion is an overseas department of France, administered by the French government. Citizens of Reunion vote in French elections. Though left-wing parties favoring home rule are strong, France is unlikely to grant independence, since Reunion hosts one of the last French bases in the Indian Ocean region.
