World Country Oman

About the world country Oman, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

NATIONS OF THE WORLD

OMAN

Location: Eastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, plus a small peninsula at the Strait of Hormuz, south of Iran. Size: 82,030 sq. mi. (212,457 sq. km.). Population: 850,000.

Who Really Rules: Although Oman is a traditional absolute monarchy, Sultan Qabus bin Said has undermined traditional economic and social structures through his cooperation with foreign agencies and corporations. British advisers, administrators, military officers, and pilots help run the government, and migrant labor, primarily from India and Pakistan, makes up over a third of the work force and much of the Omani army. Thousands of Omanis work in the neighboring United Arab Emirates and serve as mercenaries in the U.A.E. army. Oman was the only Arab state not to condemn Egypt's Camp David accords with Israel, and it permits U.S. forces to use Omani bases.
