MICRONESIA

Location: In the western Pacific Ocean, including the central Caroline Island groups of Yap, Truk, Ponape, and Kosrae. Size: 271 sq. mi. (702 sq. km.). Population: 75,000.

Who Really Rules: The backbone of the former U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific, the Federated States of Micronesia signed an agreement of free association with the U.S. on Oct. 31, 1980. This agreement bans the establishment of a non-U.S. military base on any of the more than 750 islands. Micronesia receives $3 million a year from Japan for fishing rights.
