ISLE OF MAN

Location: An island in the Irish Sea, between Great Britain and Ireland. Size: 227 sq. mi. (588 sq. km.). Population: 65,000.

Who Really Rules: Although a British dependency midway between Liverpool and Belfast, the Isle of Man is not a part of the U.K. Except on foreign affairs and military issues, it is self-governing, and it has a special trading relationship with the Common Market. English is the official language, and less than 300 residents still speak the native Manx. The legislature consists of the Legislative Council, which is appointed and indirectly elected, and the elected House of Key.
