ICELAND

Location: An island in the North Atlantic between Scandinavia and Greenland. Size: 39,768 sq. mi. (103,000 sq. km.). Population: 231,000.

Who Really Rules: Iceland's multiparty parliamentary system has a long history. The first parliament, or Althing, met in 930 A.D., but Iceland did not become independent from Denmark until 1944. The labor movement and environmental protection movement are particularly strong. Iceland has no army or navy of its own, but the U.S. operates a strategic naval air station at Keflavik.
