HONG KONG

Location: Islands and peninsula on southern coast of China, near the Pearl River estuary. Size: 403 sq. mi. (1,045 sq. km.). Population: 5,000,000.

Who Really Rules: A crown colony of the United Kingdom, Hong Kong is administered by an appointed governor under the guidance of the ruling party in Great Britain. The Hong Kong economy, traditionally the bastion of British capital and Chinese businessmen who fled China during the revolution, is open to multinational manufacturing and finance ventures from Japan, the U.S., and elsewhere.

China claims sovereignty over the colony, and the largest, least developed section--the New Territories--is scheduled to revert to China when Britain's lease expires in 1997.
