HONDURAS

Location: In Central America, bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. Size: 43,277 sq. mi. (112,088 sq. km.). Population: 3,958,000.

Who Really Rules: Honduras is in the early stages of the class conflict that has broken out into civil war in neighboring Central American republics. Though Honduras has been ruled by various military factions since 1972, the U.S., through its military aid program, is promoting the return of civilian rule. In April, 1980, the military organized elections for a constituent assembly from which left-wing and Christian Democratic parties were excluded. Despite predictions that the election would be rigged to favor the oligarchy's right-wing National party, the opposition Liberal party--split between conservative and reformist factions--won a majority. Though Honduras is no longer a "banana republic," Standard Fruit (Castle & Cooke) and United Fruit (United Brands) remain powerful.
