FRENCH GUIANA

Location: On the northern coast of South America, between Surinam and Brazil. Size: 35,135 sq. mi. (91,000 sq. km.). Population: 65,000.

Who Really Rules: The last colony in South America, French Guiana is technically an overseas department of France, with representation in the French parliament. A penal colony until the late 1940s, French Guiana is the home of France's rocket-launching center.

Most of the work force is employed by the French government. Only Indians and members of the Foreign Legion go into the sparsely populated jungle interior, although France has resettled 100 Laotian tribal families in an inland jungle clearing.
