Location: 18 inhabited islands in the North Atlantic, between Iceland and Scotland, Size: 540 sq. mi. (1,399 sq. km.). Population: 44,000.

Who Really Rules: The Faeroes are a self-governing province of Denmark, with two representatives in the Danish parliament. Primarily a fishing economy, the local government relies on subsidies from the Danish central government for a portion of its budget. The most important issue in the 1980 Faeroe Islands parliamentary elections was whether government-owned ferry service should be extended through the winter.
