CHANNEL ISLANDS

Location: Jersey, Guernsey, and other islands between Britain and France. Size: 75 sq. mi. (195 sq. km.). Population: 131,000.

Who Really Rules: Though ruled by the British crown and linked economically to Britain, the Channel Islands are not part of the U.K. They are self-governing territories whose lieutenant governors are appointed by the crown. Several British banks have established Channel Islands subsidiaries to take advantage of commercial laws there.
