Location: East of St. Vincent in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. Size: 166 sq. mi. (580 sq. km.). Population: 282,000.

Who Really Rules: Barbados, with a two-party parliamentary democratic system, is currently governed by the middle-class, pro-American Barbados Labor party. Sugar production and tourism are the leading industries, but in the past several years Barbados has welcomed foreign light manufacturing firms. Electronics firms and other export-oriented assembly firms have established factories to take advantage of the island's literate, cheap, English-speaking labor force.
