Sample Material: "Nelson himself never had any recollection of what occurred on Jan. 19, 1939. Only from his mother did he learn how they [Eddy and Ann Franklin] had driven to Las Vegas, where he had somehow stood before the judge to receive his sentence. . . . To the day he died, Nelson always believed the judge had been paid off, for no one could ethically marry someone in the condition Nelson had been in. . . . According to Jeanette, Nelson's first instinct, when he finally realized what had happened, was to get the marriage annulled. However, it seems the very night they were married, Ann and her cohorts had taken Nelson to a hotel, where he passed out on the bed. Some incriminating photos were taken to prove the marriage had been consummated. . . . Nelson, in later years, said, `I never have had a head for drinking.'"
