Sept. 10, 1897. George Smith, a London taxi driver, after consuming two or three glasses of beer, drove his electric cab up onto the pavement and into the entrance of 165 Bond Street. In court later that day, Smith was fined 20 shillings and earned the honor of becoming the world's first convicted drunk driver.
