Among these peculiar-looking fishes, and their close relatives the pipefishes, females deposit up to 200 eggs within the male's brood pouch. The "pregnant" male then carries the eggs around for four to five weeks until they hatch, at which time they are expelled from his body by contractions that closely resemble female labor in mammals.
