9. MALLEE FOWL

These Australian birds are about the size of turkeys. The female lays eggs in a large pile of decaying vegetation, sometimes 3 ft. high and 12 ft. in diameter, gathered by the male. The male assiduously tends these eggs, inspecting them daily to determine their temperature and adjusting the compost pile to keep them neither too hot nor too cold.
