5. JACANAS
These robin-sized wading birds are sometimes called "lily trotters" because their long toes enable them to walk on lily pads. The larger, more brightly colored, and more aggressive females defend territories within which there may be several small, drab, and peaceable males. The female mates with each male, who then incubates and tends the eggs for two weeks without the female's aid.
