6th Century A.D.--Irish Monk St. Brendan the Navigator
St. Brendan, like many other Irish monks, was an expert sailor. According to legend, he traveled for years on a search for an Eden across the Atlantic. The curraghs in which he sailed, boats consisting of a wooden frame covered with oxhide, were very seaworthy. He may have reached Jan Mayen Island north of Iceland and perhaps the mainland of the Americas. | ||
