* Mrs. W. A. Cockran of Shelbyville, Ind., perfected the first automatic dishwasher after a 10-year effort.

* The Second Socialist International declared May Day a holiday for radical labor. The first May Day celebration, complete with demonstrations, parades, and speeches, was held in Paris that year.
