* Rev. Hannibal Goodwin of Newark, N.J., invented celluloid photographic film.

* Arthur Conan Doyle, 28, a physician in Southsea, England, published A Study in Scarlet, the first of his Sherlock Holmes tales.

* Dr. Ludwig Zamenhof, 28, a Polish ophthalmologist, writing in Russian under the pseudonym of Dr. Esperanto (one who hopes), published Lingvo Internacia, the first Esperanto grammar.
