* The American Federation of Labor was established with Samuel Gompers as president. Restricted to skilled craftsmen, the union began with 150,000 members and obtained significant benefits from employers, because its highly trained rank and file were not easily replaced by strikebreakers.

* The Third French Republic exiled all pretenders to the throne, including the Bonaparte and Orleans families.

* Gold was discovered in the heart of the Transvaal in southern Africa, converting the rural region into the political and economic nerve center of the subcontinent.
