* An Australian expedition led by Karl Weyprecht and Julius von Payer discovered Franz Josef Land, 187 islands in the Arctic Ocean between Russia and the North Pole.

* Financial panic on the New York and Vienna stock exchanges brought on a worldwide depression, the most severe up to that time.
