* Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna overthrew Mexico's constitutional government and made himself a dictator.

Aug. 1 The first Emancipation Day was declared in the British Empire. Former slaves were to remain with their masters for several years as "apprentices" to ease the transition for both parties.
