* Having gone completely insane a year before, Chaka, Zulu chief, was murdered by his half brother Dingaan, who then assumed the chieftainship.

Aug. 27 Uruguay, a buffer state between Argentina and Brazil, gained independence from Brazil with the help of Argentina and Britain (which intervened when Brazil's blockade of Montevideo interfered with British trade).
