* Felix Mendelssohn, 17, composed his best-loved work, the overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream, after reading Shakespeare with his sisters.
* The Congress of Panama, forerunner of the Organization of American States, laid the foundations of future hemispheric cooperation. Proposed by Simon Bolivar, it was attended by Peru, Mexico, Colombia, and the United Provinces of Central America.
Apr. At the Battle of Missolonghi, after a heroic defense, the Greeks were defeated by Turko-Egyptian forces, inspiring sympathy for the Greek cause in much of Europe. | ||
