* Stonemason Joseph Aspdin of Leeds, Yorkshire, patented a process for grinding and burning limestone and clay to produce what he called "Portland cement" because of its resemblance to an English building stone quarried at Portland, Dorset. Portland cement is the cornerstone of all modern masonry construction.

Apr. 19 Lord Byron, 36, died at Missolonghi, Greece, while helping to free the country from Turkish despotism. (See "Postmortems-What They Died From," Chap. 27.)
