Mar. 1 The French and English efforts to ruin each other's trade had a disastrous effect on American shipping. The U.S. declared it would trade only with the power that removed its trade restrictions.

Dec. 16 By an act of the Senate, Napoleon divorced Empress Josephine because of his determination to have a male heir to legitimize his dynasty. Josephine, at 46, was thought to be past childbearing age.
