1784

The British Parliament designated Australia's New South Wales, claimed for England by Captain Cook in 1770 a penal colony, and four years later the first shipment of convicts arrived at Botany Bay. The penal colony was soon moved to Sydney, which became a town of loose and lawless behavior with a shortage of women and other necessities and an oversupply of rum.

Apr.27 The Marriage of Figaro, a daring comedy by Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, was presented at the Theatre Francais after a three-year ban was lifted, ironically, through the efforts of Queen Marie Antoinette and the king's brother, the Count of Artois. Both were unaware that the fashionable play, with its attack on the nobility, would prepare the way for revolution. Mozart later transformed the topical work into a deathless opera.
