Born: Nov. 23, 1804, Hillsboro, N.H. Presidential Term: Mar. 4, 1853-Mar. 4, 1857. Highlights in Office: Trade and diplomatic relations opened with Japan; Gadsden Purchase added 30,000 sq. mi. to U.S.; Kansas-Nebraska Bill. Died: Oct. 8, 1869, Concord, N.H., from stomach inflammation.
