BAGHERIA, SICILY
Sight: Villa Palagonia.
The wild garden of the Villa Palagonia in Bagheria, Sicily, is crammed with a disgusting collection of statues of cripples, dwarfs, cretins, and man-beasts. They were created around 1715 by a wayward monk for a bitter, eccentric prince, Francesco Palagonia. On an island famed for its vengeance, the prince took to making these un-pleasantries when his pretty, flirtatious wife sought love elsewhere. Each time she became pregnant, the number of malformed figurines multiplied in the hope, it was said, that she might produce an offspring as hideous as one of these.
Location: Bagheria is 8 mi. east of Palermo. | ||
