CZECHOSLOVAKIA
SEDLEC
Sight: All Saints Church.
Vandals sacked this Roman Catholic church in 1600 and absconded with all its finest ornaments and religious statuary. Rather than attempt to replace what had been stolen, the Sedlec worshipers exhumed the remains of nearly 10,000 people to produce what is certainly the most ghoulish interior in all Christendom. The highlights are a bony chandelier, made predominantly of femurs, and hundreds of skulls piled in the shape of the Schwarzenberg family crest. Fodor's Czechoslovakia says it has "a ghastly fascination."
Location: The town of Sedlec is in central Bohemia, just northeast of Kutna Hora, and served by rail. | ||
