Inventor: Robert Harries, England

Year: 1792

How Invented: Conceived by Robert Harries of the London Exchange Banking Company, England, the first type of these checks replaced letters of credit and was accepted in some 90 cities throughout the world. First introduced as "circular notes" with a value of $20, they were guaranteed against loss and theft. The modern traveler's check came into existence in 1891, when Marcellus Berry, a financial wizard, devised the countersignature type popular today.
