Appropriately kept in the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome are five pieces of the manger, the feed box used as a cradle of the infant Jesus. All year round the cradle resides in a magnificent reliquary beneath the high altar, but on Christmas morning it is removed, carried in procession, and placed on the altar as an object of veneration.
