ST. NICHOLAS OF TOLENTINO
An obscure 13th-century Augustinian friar, St. Nicholas devoted his life to preaching the Gospel and caring for the poor. Although several miracles are attributed to him, Nicholas's life was largely uneventful. His relics-fragments of his body kept at Tolentino-are famous, not because they call attention to this pious churchman, but rather because they are said to bleed as a warning that some great misfortune is about to befall Christendom. Reputed bleedings took place shortly before the fall of Constantinople and again in 1510, seven years before Martin Luther launched the Reformation.
