Smoke-filled Room - Behind the scenes political negotiations. Associated Press reporter Kirke Simpson first used the phrase in print to describe the behind-the-scenes political manipulations used to secure Warren Harding's nomination for president in 1920. However, Harry Daugherty, a friend of Harding's coined the phrase.
