NIKOLAI LENIN, Russian political leader, died 1924

Last Will: Dictated in December, 1922, when he knew he was dying, the document known as "Lenin's Testament" belatedly attempted to correct the totalitarian trends of the new Communist state. He recommended enlargement of the central committee to include a majority of workers and peasants, further suggesting that the key state planning commission be assigned legislative functions. Also, "I propose to the comrades to find some way of removing Stalin from his position and appointing somebody else who differs in all respects. . . .someone more tolerant, more loyal, more polite and considerate to his comrades, less capricious."
