Last Will: In a typical expression of his strong family affections, he left equal shares of his Pound 4,596 bachelor estate to surviving brothers and sisters and to the children of deceased siblings. His extensive science library went to a nephew studying medicine. Directions regarding his own funeral were explicit: "I request. . . . that no Pall may be employed. . . . Also that it may be a walking funeral. . . .and generally. . .that all the details be simple and inexpensive, avoiding all things which are merely done for show."
