About the last will and testament of famous American author Gertrude Stein.

WHERE THERE'S A WILL

GERTRUDE STEIN, U.S. author, died 1946

Last Will: Bequeathed the bulk of her estate-four days before she died-to longtime companion Alice B. Toklas. After Alice's death, the estate went to Allan D. Stein, Gertrude's nephew. Paintings and personal items plus $20,000 in securities and $6,50 in cash made up the total, of which any necessary amount was directed to literary executor Carl Van Vechten for publication of remaining manuscripts. As a result of what Time magazine called a "sievelike will," the Stein family deprived Alice of the art collection, and she spent her last years destitute.
