ISLE OF MAN

Size: 227 sq. mi. (572 sq. km.).

Population: 64,000.

Situated in the Irish Sea between Northern Ireland and England, the Isle of Man, although a British dependency, for the most part governs itself. Every July 5, known there as Old Mid-summer Day, government officials convene outdoors on Tynwald Hill to read aloud all the bills that have become law over the past year. Birching, beating a person with a strip of hazel wood, is an accepted form of official punishment on the Isle of Man.
