GRENADA

Size: 133 sq. mi. (344 sq. km.).

Population: 120,000.

Situated in the extreme southeastern Caribbean, Grenada has picturesque green mountains and deep valleys. Heavy annual rainfall of as much as 200 in. has caused some soil erosion, but the island's pleasant climate and white beaches continue to draw tourists. Once a British colony and now heavily supported by a multimillion-dollar annual budget payment from Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada is ruled by Prime Minister Eric Gairy, who has dominated Grenada's political scene for a quarter of a century.
