Lay of the Land: The two Germanies lie in the central heartland of Europe and are bordered by nine countries: Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. Berlin, split in two (East Berlin and West Berlin), is in East Germany. The land ranges from flat to mountainous (more than 8,000 ft. above sea level in the Bavarian Alps), and from arid to fertile.
