Fiji is distinctive in the Pacific because it is the only island where outsiders outnumber the islanders. There are 20,000 more Indians than Fijians. In early 1977, the Indian National Federation party threw the country into a turmoil by capturing more seats in the parliament (26) than the Fijian-backed Alliance party (24). However, they fell 1 seat short of a majority. New elections later in the year reaffirmed the power of the Alliance party and its leader, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara. | ||
