Size: 540 sq. mi. (1,399 sq. km.), about half the size of Rhode Island.

In the North Atlantic between Scotland and Iceland, the 19 Faeroe Islands, nearly all inhabited, are a self-governing dependency of Denmark. Residents speak an ancient Norse dialect, although Danish is the official language. The Faeroe Islands are one of the few places left on earth where boats are built exclusively with hand tools.
