Size: 179 sq. mi. (465 sq. km.).

Population: 27,000, including French and Spanish citizens.

In western Europe, in the Pyrenees, between the Spanish province of Lerida and the French department of Ariege lies a tiny nation ruled, ostensibly, by France and Spain. The prisoners incarcerated in the detention prison basement of the parliament building are released on Saturday nights, with their faithful promise of return, in order to go to the movies. Napoleon said of this tiny country: "It is too amazing to invade. Let it stand as a museum piece."
