Lay of the Land: Located in northern Africa, Algeria is nearly 90% Saharan desert. Two mountain ranges, the Tell (Maritime) Atlas and the Saharan Atlas, run parallel across the northern part of the country from the southwest to the northeast. The fertile plains of the north, known as the Tell, draw much of the population and have been producing grain for export since before the time of Christ.
Size: 919,590 sq. mi. (2,381,741 sq. km.), about 1/4 the size of the U.S.
Population: 18.5 million. Languages: Arabic, 80%; Berber, 18%; French, 1%; others, 1%.
Who Rules: The 26-member National Revolutionary Council under Pres. Houari Boumedienne.
Who REALLY Rules: The National Liberation Front, the only legal party, controls the National People's Assembly.
In 1976 Algeria held its first referendum since independence. Voters, approving a new state charter, included veiled women for the first time. Voting booths, like rest rooms, are segregated by sex in Algeria.
