THE WORLD'S GREATEST LINGUISTS

SEQUOYAH (1770?-1843)

This American Cherokee Indian is the only person in history known to have invented an alphabet for a living language. It took Sequoyah 12 years to invent his 86-character alphabet, or syllabary, to represent the sound of spoken Cherokee. The alphabet was so logical and simple that it could be learned in a few days, and it made many thousands of the illiterate Cherokee population literate within a matter of months!
